Week 3 Announcements - MakerSpace Training is Live!
Posted on: September 16, 2025 at 10:19 AM

Dear class,

Great seeing many of you yesterday! Thank you for being such an engaged audience for our panel. If you would like to speak with any of the panelists in the future, they've asked that you let me know directly so that I can connect you via e-mail.

Quick reminders:

  1. Your Skills Workshop 2 memo is due the night before your lab this week.
  2. This week in lab, you will complete Skills Workshop 3. Please review the material on the manual and pre-lab content, a short video on circuitry, ahead of time.
  3. All teams should submit their SLDP applicatons this week. From here, our team will review applications and confirm your project by Project Workshop 1.
  4. This week in recitation, you'll complete two in-class activities related to presentation skills. Please have your slide deck for Skills Workshop 2 ready (see my previous announcement for clarification on this assignment).

Also - the MakerSpace has announced their training schedule for this semester! We're excited for all of you to get access to the space and tools available through this partnership. All students must individually complete the safety orientation training as part of your SLDP process. The safety orientation is a prerequiste to access tools and equipment in the MakerSpace. Please sign up for training at this link. We ask that you complete the training by the following dates:

  • Sections A, E: Friday, 10/3
  • Sections B, H: Friday, 10/10
  • Sections C, F: Friday, 10/17
  • Sections D, G: Friday, 10/24

I will go over the training expectations in lecture on Monday as well.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please reach out.

Thank you and talk soon!

Best,

Prof. Paredes

Clarification re: Skills Workshop 2 Slide Deck
Posted on: September 15, 2025 at 04:07 PM

Dear class,

I'm writing to clarify the expectations for the Skills Workshop 2 slide deck. You do not need to prepare a full skills workshop presentation for recitation this week. Please refer to the assignment described at the end of the Skills Workshop 2 description, also listed below:

In teams, create the following illustrations in PowerPoint. Each illustration should be made on a single slide and include an appropriate caption. Imagine that these illustrations will be used in a technical presentation:

  1. A table that includes:

    1. The safety factor, volume, and material of the original part

    2. The safety factor, volume, material of the part after each modification; data from each modification should be on its own row

  2. A table that includes:

    1. The final safety factor, volume, and material obtained by your team

    2. The final safety factor, volume, and material obtained by the other teams

  3. A figure that shows a comparison between the results of the safety simulation on the part before and after each modification.

    1. If multiple modifications were made, show the results for each modification.

The faculty and TA will review your figures, tables, and graphs and comment on the clarity of the figures, adherence to the style guide, and overall visual style as part of an in-class activity during recitatin.

==

To be clear - you do not need to prepare a full presentation on your workshop tomororw; just the data and observations as described above. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me and your recitation instructors know.

Best,

Prof. Paredes
